I am often asked, “What is hypnotherapy used for?” My answer is a standard, “Whatever you want to use it for.”
In the 1950’s the British and American Medical Associations had embraced hypnosis and used it primarily for pain. More recently it’s being used by millions of people for the relief of Anxiety, Depression, Phobias, Addictions, IBS, and many other physical and emotional complaints. Currently, the NIH is conducting 21 clinical studies on the use of hypnosis for varies issues.
The advent of new technology, like brain imaging, has helped neuroscientists discover that under hypnosis there is decreased activity on the left side of the cerebral cortex, the part of your brain that controls critical thinking and aids in limiting your achievements. In contrast, the right side, which controls creativity and imagination, is a lot more active, and that is very good news! It is through the imagination that your brain creates a map of your ideal experience during hypnosis, so that it can be automatically recreated later on.
Hypnosis allows you to reach your subconscious mind to unlearn habits, relieve fears, phobias or misperceptions, and basically help you resolve anything that is holding you back from achieving fulfillment in your life. New coping skills are another valuable benefit to hypnosis because after all, finding resolution is not as hard as staying on track, especially during times of high stress.
You can use hypnosis for just about anything. After all, you are not asleep, but rather in a profound state of relaxation where your awareness of my words is actually heightened. This is similar to the state right before you fall asleep when the typical noises in your home seem louder, but it’s actually your awareness of those noises that makes them seem more intense because your body is so relaxed. For this reason, it is not possible to use hypnosis for something you do not want. You must already have a desire to stop smoking, but if you use hypnosis because your husband wants you to stop, it will not work. Actually, it’s safe to say nothing will under those circumstances, but you get the point.
Guided Imagery, deep breathing and visualization are all techniques used in Body Centered Hypnotherapy, and each session lasts between 10-20minutes. In addition, there is a 10min-a-day Active Meditation technique that helps you reinforce your new habit... a truly empowering practice.
Want relief from phobias, fears, anxiety or depression? Want support to stop excessive eating, smoking, or drinking? Want to be more organized, self-motivated, and procrastinate less? No problem. All you need is the desire to want those things and they can happen with greater ease than you ever thought possible.
